The collection consists of letters which describe life aboard ship off the eastern coast of South America and in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and San Salvador. The letters also describe life in San Francisco, California, from 1854-69.

James T. Jones lived in New York before sailing for South America on the U.S. Frigate "Raritan" from 1844-46, and he sailed on other ships around South America until after 1850. In 1854-55 he settled in San Francisco (returning again to New York from 1857-69) to engage in various business enterprises. In September of 1869, hoping to regain his health, Jones went to the Owens Valley but died within a few months at Independence, California. From the description of Papers of James T. Jo...
